The New Saint David's Day Song

Fersiwn Gymraeg isod - Welsh version follows below

In 2005, whilst taking part in the second "National Saint David's Day Parade", (NSDDP) in Cardiff I was inspired to write the lyrics to a special song, an anthem for Saint David's Day, "Cenwch y Clychau i Dewi - Ring out the bells for Saint David" and took the words to my then writing partner, Heulwen Thomas, a peripatetic violin teacher, who wrote the music to the bi-lingual lyrics I had written.S=

The song has been tremendously popular and has filled the obvious gap for a bilingual song about Saint David which can be sung throughout Wales, and further afield - and has by now been performed not only throughout Wales in schools and concerts but also in Patagonia ( South America), Canada, Wisconsin, Disneyland Paris, in two Welsh Cathedrals (Saint David's and Llandaff) on three radio channels in North America and in the Houses of Parliament in the Saint David's Day celebration (2010).

I sang the song in public for the very first time, accompanied by Heulwen Thomas on the keyboard, at the third NSDDP (National Saint David's Day Parade) in 2006 in Cardiff and soon afterwards it was adopted as the official song of the NSDDP. www.stdavidsday.org

The song was launched at the Assembly by the Presiding Officer, Lord Dafydd Elis Thomas, as 'The New Saint David's Day Song' and was the central focus of an extensive on-line educational resource pack created by the National Grid for Learning  (NGfL) in February 2008  Go to this address if you are a school and would like to use these bilingual educational resources about Saint David.                http://www.gcad-cymru.org.uk/vtc/ngfl/2007-08/wsl/irf23/dewi_sant_mp3/c_index.html

Making History:                      Saint David’s Day   In In                                         In January 2009,  the manuscript of the song made history by becoming the very first Welsh medium song to be sold as a download and was launched by Bryn Terfel and Tim Rhys Evans (Musical Director of 'Only Men Aloud' - Winners of 'Last Choir Standing') Saint David’s Day

Eilir Owen Griffiths, who won the Gold Composition Medal in the National Eisteddfod of Wales, Cardiff in 2008, was commissioned to write three choral versions of the song.(Male Voice, Female Voice and Mixed Voice) and the original Piano and Voice Manuscripts were also available.  http://www.ylolfa.com/dangos.php?lang=en&ISBN=9781847711342

In 2008 I instigated the hand embroidered "Pembrokeshire Banner" - the first of the County Banner's to be made to be paraded on Saint David's Day. It is hand stitched and based on words and images from the official song and symbols of Saint David's Cathedral.

The Banner was launched at the 'Oriel' in the Assembly in February 2009 in the presence of three Assembly members and many members of the public. Jane Hutt, Minister for Education also came to give her support. The Banner was extremely photogenic and one of the stars of the 2009 NSDDP which was attended by well over 10,000 people.

In February 2010 it was welcomed in the 'Banner Homecoming Ceremony' into its permanent home in the East Cloister at Saint David's Cathedral, in the presence of the Bishop of Saint David's, the Very Reverend Wyn Evans, the Dean, Reverend Jonathan Lean, local dignitaries, Goodwick Brass Band, Fishguard Choir, the makers and Pembrokeshire people.      www.fishguardartssociety.org.uk/ThePembrokeshireBanner.html

I was invited to sing the Saint David's Day Song on the 15th November 2009  in the presence of Rhodri Morgan, Welsh Assembly First Minister, and Dennis O'Neill, CBE, Director of the Cardiff International Academy of Voice, in a charity evening at the Thai Restaurant, Cardiff to raise money for the Agape Orphanage and School on the Thai/Burma border www.baanromjit.org/fundraising.htm

On the 12th and 13th June  2010 I had the honour of singing the Welsh National Anthem at  the 2010 Welsh Senior Open Championships and Commonwealth Games Trials  and U13 and U15 Championships at Cardiff International Sports Stadium,Leckwith. I was wearing a dress made by Rebecca Williams, an A Level Textiles pupil at Fishguard School, based on the Pembrokeshire Banner. This was the very first time this had happened and following a very positve response it is quite likely that this will become a tradition. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIqUn-mHvIs

If you Google 'Saint David's Day Anthem', you will see that the song continues to grow from strength to strength and I am extremely proud to have been involved with its creation and nurturing as it is now beginning to develop its own trajectory.

In December 2010 I was invited to become a 'Cardiff Ambassador' in recognition of my voluntary work with Saint David's Day Celebrations in Cardiff and I intend to develop this role to help promote and grow celebrations for Saint David in Cardiff, Wales and throughout the world.

Here's an on-line interview I did in February with Ceri Shaw for the American Welsh ex-pat website, AmeriCymru.                          http://americymru.net/profiles/blogs/an-interview-with-gwenno

The future

Annwyl Gwenno,                                                                             19th July 2010

I am delighted to confirm that Cardiff City Council are intent on developing the Saint David's Day Parade into a St. David's Day Festival.

We will be investing in this event and officers are currently working on a report that will be put to the Council in the autumn.

If we look around the world at the amazing festivals that take place in Lorient, Dublin and Zaragoza to name but a few, I see no reason why your St. David's Day Song should not be performed at these events, indeed, I would encourage it.

Thank you for all your hard work on these matters and I wish you every success. I look forward to speaking with you soon. Yours sincerely

Councillor Neil McEvoy. Deputy Leader Cardiff City Council Executive Member Economic Development.

Can Newydd Dydd Gwyl Dewi”

Yn 2005, tra’n cymeryd rhan yn Ail ‘Gorymdaith Genedlaethol Gwyl Dewi” (GGGD) yng Nghaerdydd, cefais fy ysbrydoli i ysgrifennu geiriau can arbennig newydd, anthem ar gyfer Dydd Gwyl Dewi, sef, "Cenwch y Clychau i Dewi" ac fe es a’r geiriau i fy mhartner ysgrifennu ar y pryd, Heulwen Thomas, athrawes ffidil beripatetig, a gofyn iddi ysgrifennu cerddoriaeth i’r geiriau dwyieithog oeddwn i wedi eu hysgrifennu.

Mae’r gan wedi bod yn hynod o boblogaidd ac mae wedi llenwi gap amlwg am gan ddwyieithog am Dewi Sant ellid ei chanu ar hyd a lled Cymru, ac ymhellach – mae’r gan eisioes wedi cael ei pherfformio mewn ysgolion a chyngherddau ar hyd a lled Cymru yn ogystal ag ym Mhatagonia,(De America), Canada, Wisconsin, Disneyland Paris, mewn dwy eglwys Gadeiriol Gymreig (sef Ty Ddewi a Llandaf)  ac ar dair sianel radio ym America yn ogystal ag yn Y Ty Cyffredin, Llundain yn eu dathliadau Dydd Gwyl Dewi yn 2010.

http://youtu.be/iPCxMxseqCg

Fe ganais i’r gan am tro cyntaf yn gyhoeddus, gyda Heulwen Thomas yn cyfeilio ar yr allweddellau yn Nhrydedd Gorymdaith Genedlaethol Gwyl Dewi (GGGD) yng Nghaerdydd yn 2006 ac yn fuan wedyn cafodd y gan ei mabwysiadu fel can swyddogol Gorymdaith Genedlaethol Gwyl Dewi. www.stdavidsday.org

Ym mis Ionawr 2008 cafodd ei lawnsio yn swyddogol gan Llywydd Cynulliad Cymru, Yr Arglwydd Dafydd Elis Thomas yn y Cynulliad fel ‘Can Newydd Dydd Gwyl Dewi’ ac fe gafodd ei defnyddio fel rhan ganolog cynllun adnoddau addysgiadol eang ar-lein am fywyd Dewi Sant trwy'r ‘Grid Genedlaethol ar Gyfer Dysgu’ (GCaD) i bob ysgol yng Nghymru yn Gymraeg a Saesneg. Cerwch i'r cyfeiriad yma os ydych chi yn ysgol ac am ddefnyddio'r adnoddau addysgiadol am Dewi Sant.                 http://www.gcad-cymru.org.uk/vtc/ngfl/2007-8/wsl/irf23/dewi_sant_mp3/c_index.html

Creu Hanes:                                                                                                            Ym mis Chwefror 2009, cafodd hanes ei greu pan gafodd maniwsgript y gan ei gwerthu fel y gan Gymreig gyntaf erioed i gael ei gwerthu dros y we a cafodd ei lansio gan Bryn Terfel a Tim Rhys Evans (Cyfarwyddwr Cerdd ‘Only Men Aloud – Ennillwyr ‘Last Choir Standing’)

Fe gomisiynwyd Eilir Owen Griffiths, ennillydd ‘Medal Aur y Cyfansoddwr’ yn Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru, Caerdydd ym 2008 i ysgrifennu trefniannau i dair fersiwn newydd gorawl ohoni. (Cor Meibion, Cor Merched a Chor Cymysg yn ogystal a’r trefniant Piano a Llais gwreiddiol)     www.ylolfa.com/henstraeon.php?lang=cym&first=189
Yn 2008 cefais y syniad i greu baner arbennig i Sir Benfro - y cyntaf o’r Baneri Sirol i gael eu gwneud i gael eu gorymdeithio ar Ddydd Gwyl Dewi, wedi ei gwnio gyda llaw ac wedi ei selio ar y gan swyddogol a’r delweddau ynddi a symbolau o Eglwys Gadeiriol Ty Ddewi.

Cafodd y Faner ei lansio yn Oriel y Senedd ym mis Chwefror 2009 ym mhresenoldeb tri Aelod y Cynulliad ac ugeiniau o’r Cyhoedd. Fe biciodd Y Gweinidog Addysg bryd hynny, Jane Hutt, i mewn i roid ei chefnogaeth. R’oedd y Faner yn hynod o ffotogenaidd ac yn sicr yn un o ser GGGD 2009, oedd a torf o oddeutu 10,000 yn bresennol.

Ym mis Chwefror 2010 cafodd y Faner ei chroesawu i mewn i’w chartref parhaol yng Nghloistyr Ddwyreiniol Eglwys Gadeiriol Ty Ddewi, ym mhresenoldeb Esgob Ty Ddewi, y Tra Barchedig Wyn Evans, Y Deon, Y Parchedig Jonathan Lean, pwysigion lleol, Band Tarian Gwdig, Cor Abergwaun, y gwneuthurwyr a Phobl Sir Benfro. www.fishguardartssociety.org.uk/ThePembrokeshireBanner.html

Cefais wahoddiad i ganu Can Dydd Gwyl Dewi ar y 15fed o Dachwedd 2009 mewn noson elusen yn y Bywdy Thai yng Nghaerdydd i godi arian i Gartref ac Ysgol Plant Amddifad Agape ar ffin Gwlad Thai a Burma, ym mhresenoldeb Prif Weinidog y Cynulliad, Rhodri Morgan a Dennis O’Neill, CBE, Cyfarwyddwr Academi Lais Ryngwladol Caerdydd. www.baanromjit.org/fundraising.htm
Ar y 22fed a'r 23ain o Fehefin cefais y fraint o ganu ein Hanthem Genedlaethol ym Mhencampwriaethau Athletau Agored Cymru a threialon Gemau'r Gymanwald yn goystal a threialon O Dan 13 oed ac O Dan 15 oed yn Stadiwm Mabolgampau Rhyngwladol Caerdydd yn Llechwedd. Dyma'r tro cyntaf i unrhywun wneud hyn ac yn dilyn ymateb ffafriol iawn mae'n bosib y bydd hwn yn datblygu i fod yn draddodiad blynyddol. R'oeddwn yn gwisgo ffrog oedd wedi ei hysbrydoli gan Faner Sir Benfro ac wedi ei chreu gan Rebecca Williams, disgybl Tesctsiliau Lefel A yn Ysgol Uwchradd Abergwaun. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIqUn-mHvIs

Os wnech chi Gwglo 'Saint David's Day Anthem' cewch weld fod y gan yn mynd o nerth i nerth ac r'wyf yn hynod o falch fy mod wedi bod yn rhan o'i chreu a'i meithrin gan ei bod nawr yn dechrau creu ei llwybr ei hunan.

Ym mis Rhagfyr 2010 cefais wahoddiad i ddod yn un o 'Llysgenhadwyr Caerdydd' fel cydnabyddiaeth o fy ngwaith gwirfoddol gyda Dathliadau Dydd Gwyl Dewi yng Nghaerdydd ac ymhellach, ac r'wy'n bwriadu datblygu'r rol yma i gynorthwyo hybu tyfiant a datblygiad dathliadau Dewi Sant yng Nghaerdydd, Cymru a gweddill y byd.
